Ahead of remembrance weekend and Armistice Day, events took place in Parliament to honour the men and women who serve and lay down their lives in defence of our freedom.
A debate in the House of Commons on 28 October showed how deeply proud we are as a country of our Armed Forces personnel, veterans, and the families who support them, and provided an opportunity to reflect on remembrance.
Remembrance is the moment we come together as a nation to honour those who have served and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms and protect our way of life. Together we remember the service and sacrifice of UK and Commonwealth personnel not only in the First and Second World Wars, but in all conflicts since.
I was honoured to place a tribute in Parliament’s Constituency Garden of Remembrance on behalf of North Durham ahead of attending remembrance services across the constituency over remembrance weekend.
The Government is committed to strengthening support for our veterans and our Armed Forces community and to renewing the nation’s contract with those who serve and have served, and their families. I am pleased that this includes plans to put the Armed Forces Covenant fully into law, to strengthen support for and ensure everyone who serves or has served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect.
